Vuorilampi Nature Reserve – Kuopio

Over the Easter holidays, I went home to Finland for a few weeks. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love London, but now and then the only antidote to London’s busy streets and polluted skies is to get as far away as possible.
 .
Finland is my cure.

Spending time with family, the smell of my childhood home, reading books and cooking mummy’s recipes. Nothing in the world beats that.

But getting outside, away from technology, the internet, is good for the soul.

Vuorilampi Nature Reserve is one of the most beautiful areas in Kuopio. And literally in our backyard. Fresh air, walking paths covered in pure white snow, fragrant pine forest, caves, towering walls of rock where giant icicles sparkle in the sunshine. Calm, healing, an easy form of meditation.

The forest is drop-of-a-pin quiet. Unless, of course, you meet the woodpecker.

There are many easy to follow paths to choose from.

If you packed lunch, head down towards the Vuorilampi lake and use your campfire nose as your compass!

Sitting around a camp on a sunny winter day with some of your favourite people, a wooden kuksa of hot coffee in one hand, a grilled sausage with mustard in the other and a crackling campfire next to you.
That’s the stuff dreams are made of.

Continue your walk and climb up as high as you can get. Walk along the cliff side and enjoy the postcard-perfect forest views.

But keep going, it gets better!

Walk a little further out and you’ll come to this point. Don’t worry, you won’t miss it.
You’ll be rewarded with unbeatable views over the vast expanse of forests and Lake Kallavesi.

Maybe now you see why I call Finland my London antidote.

The Vuorilampi walking trails are wonderful during the warmer months as well – you can even pick berries and mushrooms at the end of the summer. Perhaps I’ll take some more pictures and write another post next summer.

Thank you Helene 😘 Everyone in the pictures are my aunt and cousins. We had a wonderful time and thought we looked pretty funny as such a big group on those narrow snowy paths (like a train 🚂)

Wow. I actually lived in Neulamäki for around 2 years and have visited this place couple of times. However, I’ve never realized how beautiful Vuorilampi actually is. I hate photographing when it’s cold out there but probably I should go out a bit with my camera next winter. Your photos are stunning!

Now if Winter always came looking like this, (complete with sausages and warm mugs and a cute puppy with snow on his mouth and beautiful views!!) it would be a season I could get behind. LOL!

I love winter in Finland because there’s so much snow and it’s pretty – however, in London it’s just messy when it snows so I’m not a fan 🙂
