When a sun hits your eye like a big pizza pie – Pizza East

Ciao everyone! London has had its share of proper heat in the last couple of weeks and we spent our weekend outside enjoying the sun, lounging on the grass and eating some proper pizza. At Pizza East that is, in the west, on Portobello Road.

Follow me, let’s hide from the afternoon sun…

We got a table right by the big windows, on a lovely breezy spot.

We loved the laid-back, rustic decor, with the reclaimed wood, industrial furniture and tiled floors.

We started with some good old crispy squid with chilli and caper aioli.

With the open kitchen, you can see the chefs at work, and pizzas being cooked to perfection by the fire in the wood-burning oven.

The pizzas arrived with some chilli oil, and to our surprise, with a jar of crushed dry chilli flakes. Not usually served this way in London. And funny enough, earlier that day we had just been memorising how much we miss that simple slice of New York pizza with a sprinkle of dry chilli flakes on top – simply spectacular.

The Italian sausage pizza with mozzarella, cream and broccoli was hands down one of the best pizzas I’ve had. Spicy, creamy and rich. The wood-fired base was both, chewy and crisp with speckles of burned dough that add to the flavour.

Creamy burrata, aubergine, oh so fresh – pesto & tangy cherry tomatoes.

Trust me, you don’t wanna miss out on these.

And we could not resist trying their apricot gelato – delicious and refreshing.

With weather that glorious, there were no excuses for walking it all off on the beautiful streets of west London. We made one more stop for fresh pineapple juice on Portobello Road before heading for an afternoon nap. Summer weekends are the best…
