The winter season in Kuopio offers up plenty of opportunities to lace up your ice skates and head out for an unforgettable ice-skating experience, whatever your competence on the ice!

Lake Kallavesi is Finland’s 10th largest lake and  — and, when frozen, a perfect l place to skate in a natural setting with the stunning backdrop of the Lakeland region. At 12.5 kilometres long, the natural ice skating track on the lake grants plenty of space to glide on glittering ice under a winter sky.

If you don’t have your own skates, you can rent everything from boots to blades, kick sledges to skis from the Ice Skate Rental company that’s located on the lake itself. There you’ll also find the little  Skating Café selling hot food and drinks to hungry skaters. Make sure to make a stop there after your ice-skating – the hot drinks will soon warm you up again.

Act quick, because come spring, these winter wonders will simply melt away.

I’ve only skated at indoor ice rinks, so this seems daring. I’m curious about the straight line across the track. Is it a re-frozen crack? It makes the track look like an icy road. Are those ships stuck till the spring thaw?

Hi Sue – the ice thickness is over 40cm so it’s safe to even drive cars on ice, but yes, I think they are cracks caused by the temperature changes. The big, heavy steel boats can stay in the water all year around – apparently the water around them doesn’t freeze.

I love a proper ice skating😍 I’m used to skating on a river, Kokemäenjoki as we don’t have many lakes in Western-Finland but on a lake it definitely would be a lot safer haha. Though, winters back then were so much colder & in 2018 I wouldn’t go on a frozen river anymore. It’s been too warm, I don’t trust them 😀

In Southern Finland is probably not as safe, you’re right. At our summer house (small lake) the ice thickness was over a meter and its still frozen today.

Nice post! I used to live just next to those skating places but I have never had time for ice skating. It’s super fun! I wish I’d have a change to try some other winter. 🙂

I think you would love it – its so much fun and in the spring the tracks are so well looked after.

I love your pics! I lived in Canada for about 8 years but never went ice skating lol! I am a beast at roller blading, tho. glad to see you had a fun snow day!

Thank you ❤️ Ice-skating is very similar to rollerblading so you would totally ace on ice too!

Oh man this is sooo beautiful!!! The lady with the stroller is giving me a hectic reminder to do more outdoors with my 6 month old!

    • 27th April 2018 / 11:26 pm

There were lots of families with strollers and small kids on ice-skates – its really a great activity for the whole family. Big kiss to your little one xx

Omg, this looks like a true fairytale place, so surreal. I would love to just ice skate for km on a natural ice. How cool is that!

    • 15th March 2018 / 9:15 am

It really is pretty amazing. You can choose the length of your run and it’s so nice to have so much space. Most people seem to do the whole run (12.5km) and some even do it few times. Skating is pretty fast once you figure it out.

Not many things in this world are more zen than sliding on ice in the when the sun is shining and there’s a nice crisp frost in the air. I miss this about winters – I need to visit the motherland more to do it.

You’re so right Katja, Finland definitely has its perks 🙂 I wonder if any lakes in the UK freeze?

What a great way to get outdoors in the Winter and get some fresh air!! I haven’t been ice skating in years…and I haven’t been ice skating OUTDOORS since I was a kid. My family lived in Austria back then but in the U.S. I’ve never lived anywhere far enough North to have outdoor skating.

    • 27th April 2018 / 11:28 pm

I know, its the same in London. Well we do have outdoor ice-skating rinks here during the winter months but they are usually super crowded.

Wonderful photos! It’s crazy that I used to live like 500 metres from the marina of Kuopio but I never had time to go iceskating there. Those iceskating routes are very beautiful and that’s also a good way to get some exercise and fresh air!

    • 27th April 2018 / 11:29 pm

Kuopio is amazing for all these outdoor activities x
