Afternoon tea is one of the occasions that I absolutely love about living in London. Getting together with friends and drinking delicious tea & champagne, chatting over dainty sandwiches and desserts in beautiful surroundings – what’s there not to love. And one of most special ones for it is Claridge’s afternoon tea.
On Sunday afternoon we stepped into the Claridge’s Hotel and gasped – this old world charm is so elegant.
Held in a luxurious Art Deco-inspired foyer, this is the grand queen of afternoon teas, with a waiting list to match. We made our reservation about two months ago.
The magnificent Foyer is light, airy and filled with fresh flowers and gentle, live piano and violin music – truly a magical experience. Almost like you have travelled back in time.
We started our afternoon tea with a chilled glass of Laurent Perrier and a tray of finger sandwiches. From poached salmon with dill and rock samphire to chicken with smoked tomato, we made our way through a first round and couldn’t turn down seconds. Out came egg with French sorrel and ham with crab apple, mustard and watercress. They were all absolutely delicious, my favourite being the poppy and parmesan puffs with goats cheese and summer vegetables.
After all the savoury treats, it was time to have our teas and scones. The freshly baked and warm raisin and plain scones came with Cornish clotted cream and Claridge’s secret recipe; Marco Polo jelly – sigh.
Soon the scones were nothing more than crumbs on our plates, and we moved on to the final stage of our afternoon tea: the pastries. A tray of beautiful desserts arrived with banana cake, pecan and walnut brownie with dark chocolate ganache, almond macaroon with strawberry mousse and baked custard tart.
We chatted over the delicious desserts, sipped our teas and enjoyed every moment.
Whatever we could not finish, got packed beautifully to take home.
If you are looking for a delightful way to celebrate something with friends or to perhaps treat your mum – Claridge’s afternoon tea is the Queen of afternoon teas in London and will make anyone’s knees go Marco Polo jelly with excitement.
