Riuttalan Talonpoikaismuseo – Farmhouse Museum

Here, at Riuttalan Talonpoikaismuseo in Karttula, Kuopio wide floorboards creak of history and the locals tell a variety of stories of the past generations, what was it like before – some I believe are true, some with a little spark of imagination. The Riuttala Farmhouse Museum’s rustic peasant atmosphere has remained intact, and as a historical wholeness, and it’s distinctive architecture provide a great Finnish attraction.

It’s amazing how much you can learn about your own heritage, traditional Savonian peasant life and its history by just driving along beautiful country roads to Riuttala, about 40km from Kuopio. I highly recommend, its a true journey to a Finnish rural way of life in the 19th-century.

Many, many questions arose while walking and admiring the buildings and their original artefacts and luckily for me, there were not only my parents and my grandmother but also a lot of locals who happily told me the stories behind each item, without forgetting all the little details. Through these people shone a genuine love for this historic farm and its culture, and at the same time, a concern for its uncertain future due to financial difficulties.

We visited Riuttala Farmhouse Museum during the Rye Harvest Festival, you can read about it here.
